Yellow diamonds haven't been that popular throughout history as most people believed how yellow diamonds aren't very desirable. This is the main reason why these diamonds were judged as less valuable than classic white diamonds. But this is only partially true and applies mostly to faintly colored yellow diamonds while intensely colored yellow diamonds are very rare and very expensive. Natural intensely colored yellow diamonds are almost rare as the natural red diamonds and majority of intensely colored yellow diamonds has lab origin.
Most of yellow diamonds were found in Africa, especially South Africa and among them were also some very famous diamonds such as "Kimberley Octahedron", that weighed 616,00 carats in its rough state, and was discovered in 1972 in South Africa. Another even bigger giant was legendary diamond appropriately called "The Incomparable" that weighed 890 carats, and was found in the town of Mbuji Mayi in the Democratic Republic of Congo a young girl playing in a pile of rubble. This is third largest diamond ever cut and the world’s largest internally flawless diamond. Argyle mine in Australia recently also produced significant number of fancy colored yellow diamonds.
Fancy colored diamonds are becoming more popular and this is also the case with yellow diamonds, especially intensely colored yellow diamonds. However since intensely colored yellow diamonds are very expensive many people seek for alternatives, usually in form of citrines, topaz or yellow sapphires.
